Projection is a psychological term used to describe a defense mechanism that we all posses. This is when we perceive a trait to be so unappealing or unacceptable that we deny, or are not aware, that we possess it.  And instead we negatively judge other people for possessing the quality or habit. It can take someone pointing it out to us the irony of our disliking a quality/habit that we also possess.

It's actually quite normal to resist another person changing. Don't feel badly, they might do the same if the tables were turned. When another person changes, it can change the relationship. We're used to relating, spending time, enjoying particular shared experiences. And we can feel a sense of threat or loss when the other person no longer can, or wants to, share those experiences with us.

When we find ourselves feeling disconnected in this way, it can actually feel painful and isolating. And one of our quick reflex defenses when that happens is to make ourselves right and the other person wrong...and react in ways that create even more distance.

This is self-protective to our sense of identity, which allows us to see ourselves as being somehow better/more interesting/more attractive/smarter/more successful.
