Most people are uncomfortable with uncertainty and confusion. We try to deal with this discomfort by striving for, and sometimes forcing, clarity and control...even when there isn't any clarity yet and we don't actually have control. However, forcing clarity and control, where there is none, maybe misguided and only provides us with a temporary illusion of control. Where we do actually have control is in becoming more aware of our habits in these moments and in learning how to respond with patience, self-compassion and wisdom.

We're often caught in the dilemma of where to place our attention, and this can lead to feeling guilty no matter what you choose. When experiencing difficult emotions, it's common to try and avoid pain in the immediate moment, and go with the path of least resistance. This may or may not serve us best in the long-run. By learning to identify and explore uncomfortable emotions, like guilt, we can understand why we are experiencing them, and manage them in a way that also allows us to make wise long-term choices.

Seeing Through Stress

By taking a perspective that the stress is temporary, that there is something valuable for you to learn from it in terms of your personal or professional growth, and believing that you will be able to handle it, you can actually benefit greatly from stress. You can see it as a necessary building block in having success at work, hobbies, and in relationships.

For most people, when workplace stress is high and there are more work demands, we'll stop the activities we look forward to outside of work. We might skip our exercise classes, hobbies, cut back on time with friends and family, or let go of meaningful activities like volunteering or spiritual endeavors. The irony is that by engaging in these activities we are nurturing positive emotions and increasing our positive experiences that will help us to buffer the stress we're experiencing at work.

Opportunity For Growth

Being in what is called a  fixed mind-set has us perceiving our capabilities as pretty much fixed and limited at where we are now. Our intelligence, abilities and personality has only a limited room to grow. Failure and feedback that we're not doing well can send our egos into a crisis of I'm a failure. Growth mind-set, perceivesour intelligence, abilities and personality as having a great deal of growth possibility.
