For most of us, our daily rituals move us toward and take us away from what we consider success. This keeps us stuck in a “good enough” zone, but never in the “feeling successful” zone. What if you could interrupt the rituals, or habits that hold you back and replace them with ones that empower you toward a more effective, healthier and happier life? For example, getting up without hitting snooze 5 times and meditating for 10 minutes instead. Or not checking your email before you get out of bed, and instead setting your top three priorities for the day.

When we're in a state of flow, this is that feeling of being in the zone. It's a mental state of being fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. When we're experiencing the opposite of flow, we're at risk of reacting to the pressure to get something done in ways that keep us stuck. We might try to force ourselves to be creative or get caught up in our feeling of frustration creating more stress and tension. And these reactions could actually make getting into a state of flow even less likely. What we truly need in these moments is to take a step back before moving forward.

While many fear that being compassionate means they won’t be able to make the tough decisions, hold people accountable, or push themselves or their organizations toward excellence, nothing could be further from the case. Compassion is not about being a pushover. It’s about “seeing others,” being touched by the human impact of the choices being made by others, including corporate leadership, and often gain the loyalty of those around them because they are moved to improve conditions based on the feedback their employees share.
